Frequently Asked Questions

What can I do with UsenetBucket?

UsenetBucket offers access to a platform called usenet. Usenet is mainly used for transferring data and exchanging text messages. By using UsenetBucket, you can share and get text messages and data.

What is usenet?

Usenet, short for users network, is one of the oldest platforms served by the Internet. Originally designed at Duke University in 1979 and developed at Duke and North Carolina Universities a year later, its purpose was to exchange text messages between nodes (computers connected to the network). Usenet has grown to a big platform with a wide variety of forums or newsgroups numbering in the tens of thousands.

Today usenet is still used as a big bulletin board, in additional it is also used for data transfer by using Binary Files often in a compressed format like RAR or ZIP. A Binary file is a general term for a container. Binary Files can contain everything from movies, music, graphics to standard text documents.

How reliable is the UsenetBucket service?

UsenetBucket provides the most reliable usenet service available. Over the past three years, UsenetBucket has delivered 99.999% up-time. The redundancy built into our usenet systems allows UsenetBucket to maintain availability even during planned and emergency maintenance.

How fast is the UsenetBucket service?

UsenetBucket is a true broadband usenet provider offering un-congested usenet servers and networking equipment as well as Gigabits of available bandwidth. Of course, the speed of your downloads depends on how you connect to the Internet, the quality of the connection and service your ISP provides.

What is SSL?

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), is a cryptographic protocol that provide communications security over the Internet. SSL encrypts the segments of network connections above the Transport Layer, using symmetric cryptography for privacy and a keyed message authentication code for message reliability.
In other words, the only one who can understand what you are reading or downloading, is you!

What is retention?

Retention stands for the amount of days we archive all the articles that have been posted to usenet. Though this might vary from group to group.

What is a NZB file?

NZB is an XML-based file format for retrieving posts from usenet. Each usenet message has a unique identifier called the 'Message-ID'. When a large file is posted to a usenet newsgroup, it is usually divided into multiple messages (called segments or parts) each having its own Message-ID. An NZB-capable usenet client will read all needed Message-ID's from the NZB file, download them and decode the messages back into a binary file.

What is a PAR2 file?

When dealing with a lot of different servers sometimes a new post can be damaged or transferred in an incorrect way. By using the PAR files you can repair these damaged new posts. This way you do not need to download everything once again. A good program to handle PAR files is QuickPar.

A list of good programs for dealing with PAR files:
